First ESG shipping index launched

Dr Stavros Karamperidis at the University of Plymouth has launched the first ESG index for the shipping industry.

The ESG Index has been designed by Karamperidis, head of maritime transport research at the University of Plymouth, and academics from the University of Athens. They were helped by an advisory committee including Gina Panayiotou, ESG Manager, West P&I and Christopher Fee, Director, Global Engagement & Sustainability, Oldendorff.

The new Index is based on detailed analysis of 70 public ESG and sustainability reports from shipping companies and aims to assist shipping companies in drawing up accurate and measurable ESG profiles to meet upcoming stricter ESG reporting requirements.

Karamperidis says, “the ESG Index is a tailormade tool to support the industry through the transitional and challenging period,”  “reducing the time and complexities required for companies to efficiently assess where they stand. We are very excited to be presenting this first ESG Index for maritime during LISW 2023 especially, which will gather a diverse range of stakeholders from around the globe.”

The index was launched during London International Shipping Week 2023 on 11 September.
